Viagra®, Cialis® and Levitra®

Viagra®, Cialis® and Levitra® are oral medications that are used to treat erectile dysfunction.  Each of these drugs is FDA approved specifically for use to treat erectile dysfunction.

These drugs inhibit an enzyme, phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which increases the amount of nitric oxide in the lining of the blood vessels in a man's penis.  This helps the man get an erection.

* Viagra® or Sildenafil citrate was the first of this class of drugs to be available and has been around for about 20years. * It should be taken 1-2 hours before sexual relations begin and should have a benefit for about 4 hours, and sometimes longer.  It works best when taken on an empty stomach.  So if you want this drug to work well, you may need to have sex before eating dinner!  The medication only works with sexual stimulation and is best if not taken with alcohol.




* Cialis® or Tadalafil works the same way Viagra does.  Cialis can be taken two ways; dosing as needed like with Viagra and dosing for every day usage.  * The as needed dosing of Cialis has been known to help for up to 36 after the drug is taken.  This medication also works best on an empty stomach and without alcohol.

Levitra® or Vardenafil works in much the same way as Viagra.

While these drugs have a good safety profile, there are some side effects.  Some of the most common side effects are skin flushing, headaches, nausea, dyspepsia, visual changes, hearing changes, amnesia, arrhythmias or an irregular heart beat and a prolonged erection.  There are also some recent reports that this class of drugs may increase a man's chance of developing malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

* These drugs may not be taken if a man is not medically cleared for sexual activity, is using nitrates for angina, some street drugs like poppers or amyl nitrate or has had a heart attack or stroke in the last 6 months.  They may be used only with great caution in men also taking alpha blockers, antifungal medication and many other medications.

This class of drugs seems to be effective for many men.  However, for some men they either do not respond well enough to the medications, cannot safely use them or cannot tolerate the side effects.
