PENILE IMPLANTS
Penile implants are devices that are surgically inserted into a man's penis who has erectile dysfunction and that allows him to get an erection.
If a man is unable to get a usable erection by available medical (non-surgical) means or if he dislikes the medical methods available to get an erection, a penile implant is a choice of treatment.
While an implant is a good choice for some men as a way to get an erection, it should usually be a last resort. The medical (non-surgical) methods of getting an erection should usually be pursued first by a patient.
We do not perform surgery or surgically insert penile implants in our practice.
A man should have a consultation with at least two surgeons when considering a penile implant. It is important that a man chose a surgeon who does penile implants on a regular basis. There are several excellent surgeons in the NY metropolitan area that routinely perform implants.
Penile implants are complicated surgery and there is the risk of infection and mechanical failure. There are several types of implants; Malleable implants (non-inflatable and bendable) which are usually firm and which may be bent away from the body to have sex or towards it to hide the erection; and inflatable implants which are inflated when a man wants an erection and is flaccid at other times.
While we have the greatest respect for the fine surgeons in the area that perform penile implants, our goal is to be able to help as many men as we can to get an erection without the need for surgery.
* While we
will certainly try to help all of our patients, as with
any medical treatment, there is no guarantee of specific results, as
results can and usually do vary from patient to patient.
